Downsizing or rightsizing? Downsizing in retirement can not only be the right thing to do but also an invigorating move

We are constantly being told that there is an inadequate supply of family homes, but how many of family houses are currently being lived in by people in their 70’s and 80’s?   Around 3.1million people who have paid off their mortgage are in homes where there are two bedrooms for everyone living there while, according to research by estate agents Savills, the over-65s own £1.2trillion of today’s property wealth.

Although it may seem a daunting prospect, downsizing can be a positive and rewarding decision. Not only can it release equity it can also release the stress and expense of maintaining a large house and gardens. But more importantly it means moving to a property which is right for you.  Retirement apartments today can provide generous sized apartments with fantastic facilities and services.  It also means being within a social community surrounded by likeminded neighbours.

Paul Hart, manager at the new retirement village Emerson Park, which is to open soon in Hextable, Kent, commented, “Many people have the preconceived idea that retirement apartments are small pokey flats with very little or no support and facilities.  This certainly isn’t the case at Emerson Park; large well-designed apartments with the very highest quality specification are complimented with luxury amenities such as the Club House Room where you can meet friends for a coffee or enjoy a 3-course meal, obviously after enjoying a G&T in the bar first!  You can keep in shape in the gym and then be pampered in the hair and beauty salon.  Or why not take up a new hobby? Our dedicated Events & Activities Manager will be arranging a whole host of social events tailored around the interests of the people living here.”

As well as having all these facilities on your doorstep a move to such a retirement community not only means you can enjoy the independence of a new home but also live without the worry of the ongoing upkeep and maintenance associated with an older property. As well as this is the support system which is available at certain retirement developments and one Paul was keen to explain.

“It’s not only the apartment and facilities which people are buying into at Emerson Park, but also the services.  Our driver will provide daily scheduled trips, either to the local supermarket or to places of interest such as National Trust properties or a theatre trip. Our gardeners and maintenance team will ensure the site looks its best throughout the year. Plus, all apartments have the reassurance of an emergency call system which are answered by members of staff who are on-site 24-hours a day.”

Like any move, the decision to move house and downsize is certainly a big one.  However, this can be an exhilarating and positive decision; one where you can move to a property which is right for you within a luxury, social and friendly community.

The show apartment at Emerson Park is available to view Monday to Saturday 10am – 4pm and on Sunday by prior appointment.
