Advanced Pain Detection technology introduced in all Cinnamon homes

As pain is a deeply multifaceted experience, recognising and communicating pain early is important in preventing discomfort, emotional changes and health decline in the elderly.

This is especially true for people living with dementia, where communication becomes progressively more difficult. Understanding dementia and pain is essential, as individuals may struggle to find words or recall events, making it harder to express discomfort.

Smarter pain detection with PainChek

We are introducing PainChek advanced pain detection technology in all Cinnamon care homes and transforming how we detect, assess and manage pain for all the residents we support. PainChek uses AI learnings and clinical insight to help care teams to reach a resident right in the early stages of pain, as it develops.

Using smart facial recognition alongside guided clinical observations, PainChek enables our teams to complete accurate pain assessments in just minutes, and directly at the point of care.

Why this matters for dementia care

Effective pain management for people with dementia is essential for maintaining quality of life. With some people at an advanced stage of dementia self-reporting is quite often just not the case, leading to emotional distress, changes in behaviour or unmet care needs.

By improving pain management in dementia, PainChek helps to ensure that discomfort is identified early, supporting more personalised care.

How it works in our homes

PainChek fits seamlessly into daily care routines:

  • Care teams use a mobile device to assess residents in real time
  • Facial micro-expressions are analysed using AI
  • Staff complete a short, guided checklist of behavioural indicators
  • A pain score is generated instantly
  • Results are tracked over time to monitor changes and treatment effectiveness

This structured approach ensures consistency, accuracy, and confidence in every interaction.
