Creating rock stars in our Cinnamon care homes

Just like septuagenarians Sir Mick and Sir Rod, residents at Rivermede Court, Rectory Court, Hartwood House, Emerson Grange, Abbotswood Court and Wellington Vale are proving that age isn’t an issue when it comes to being a Rock Star! Our Cinnamon Care Collection luxury care homes have introduced a new, rhythm-led exercise initiative for residents, that uses weighted drum sticks in a highly effective and enjoyable group cardio fitness activity.

Performed to rousing rock music, these drum based fitness classes are organised in collaboration with an American company called POUND. The total-body workout combines exercises designed to improve coordination, mobility, strength and balance for participants of all ages and fitness levels. As each participant moves to the music, their drumstick beats join with the strikes of their classmates to create a unified and rhythmic sound.

Candice O’Neill, General Manager at Rivermede Court comments, “The feedback from our residents has been incredibly positive. They love the energy, the music, the physical drumming movements and the chance to be a Rock Star for a day! As always, our approach at Cinnamon is to gently challenge perceptions of life in a care environment and to bring new thinking to engage and entertain our residents.”

Cinnamon Care resident Margaret Ainger, 88 years young adds, “We all really enjoyed rocking out to the drum fit class which was such fun that it didn’t really feel like exercise.  It goes to show you are never too old to turn up the volume and rock your socks off!”

Cinnamon Care Activity Coordinators recently attended training courses to deliver these vibrant and energetic classes, which combine sensory, physical and emotional elements, all vital for health and well-being, particularly in later life. Research has found that drumming stimulates parts of the brain that improve cognition in older adults, as well as benefitting the social, physical and other psychological aspects of health. Both exercise and drumming benefit the ageing mind and body so together this new workout facilitates a one-of-a-kind experience that promotes holistic fitness.

POUND Founder & CEO, Kirsten Potenza adds, “We pride ourselves on creating a workout that is truly for any age and any stage. Watching that come to life and bringing joy to so many diverse communities is what gives us the motivation to keep doing what we do. What you see with POUND at Cinnamon Luxury Care are the positive effects of music and movement, not only for the body but the mind and the spirit.”
